A Local Guide with Real Prices

Looking for western food in Menglembu? You have more options than the delivery apps suggest. There's a western stall inside the Menglembu market, a western-Thai crossover kitchen in the industrial area, a few cafe-style places around Bandar Baru — and D Times Cafe, our own family restaurant on Laluan Perusahaan Menglembu 1, where a chop set runs RM12.90 with mushroom soup, bread and a drink included. Expect to pay roughly RM12 to RM20 for a chop plate in Menglembu, a few ringgit less than the same plate in Ipoh Garden. Below is where to go, what it costs, and which day everyone closes.

We run D Times Cafe, a Chinese and Western family restaurant in Menglembu. Six days a week we're grilling chops about two shops down from OldTown Falim, and on our day off we eat around the neighbourhood like everyone else.

So yes — our own restaurant is on this list. We've put our full prices in writing rather than calling ourselves affordable and leaving it there, and for the other places we've stuck to what we can actually verify: what they are and roughly where to find them. We haven't printed anyone else's prices or opening hours, because those change and we're not going to send you across town on stale information. Call ahead or check their page before you drive over.

This one is ours, so instead of describing it we'll just show you the bill.

A value set meal is RM12.90 and includes the main, mushroom soup, bread and a drink — that's the whole point of the set, so nobody has to price up four separate drinks. Chicken chop, chicken chop with rice, fried pork chop with rice and Chicken Maryland are all RM12.90 as sets. Grilled pork chop is RM14.90, mix chop RM19.90, fish and chips RM20.90, grilled lamb RM35.90. Spaghetti bolognese or carbonara RM13.90, smoked duck aglio-olio RM15.90. À la carte, without the set, chicken chop starts at RM11.90.

Every chop comes with a choice of six sauces — black pepper, mushroom, Thai, Hainan, honey and lemon — at no extra cost. Black pepper and mushroom win the popularity contest by a wide margin. Salted egg is our newest sauce and it is not one of the six: it's a paid upgrade, RM15.90 for the salted egg chicken chop set, or RM2.00 as an add-on.

Not everyone wants a chop. Local dishes start at RM9 — Yong Zhou fried rice, tom yam fried rice, wan tan hor the way Ipoh likes it, fried kuay tiow — with black pepper fried udon at RM10.90 and tom yam seafood rice at RM15.90. One table, Chinese and Western at once, which is the practical reason families end up here.

Kids eat for RM8.80 with a free drink, ages 12 and under: American breakfast, spaghetti bolognese or carbonara, sausage fried rice, fish and chips, or mini Maryland.

Uncle Boon Western Food — western food inside the pasar

The one that surprises people. It's a stall inside the Menglembu market, which is not where most people expect to find a chop, and that's rather the point — the stall's own line is that a market stall can do western food properly at market-stall prices. Market trade means market hours, so this is a daytime plan, not a dinner plan. Worth going early.

Western N Thai Cuisine — chops and Thai on one menu

In Kawasan Perusahaan Menglembu. As the name says, the menu runs western and Thai together — chicken chop and lamb chop alongside Thai salad, noodles and fried rice. Useful when half the table wants a chop and the other half wants something with chilli in it. Non-halal.

Daddy's Cafe — the cafe-style option

What western food actually costs in Menglembu

Every other page about Menglembu food will tell you a place is "affordable" and stop there. Here are real numbers, using our own menu, since it's the one we can vouch for. A family of four, ordering normally:

For the rest of Menglembu, budget roughly RM12–RM20 for a chop plate, less at the market stall, more if you're ordering lamb anywhere.

Menglembu or Ipoh Garden?

Honest answer: it depends what you're after.

Menglembu wins on the boring practical stuff. Parking is free and directly outside the shop rather than in a mall lot. Rents are lower here than the tourist belt, and that shows up in the bill — the same chop generally costs a few ringgit less. And if you live in Menglembu or Falim, you're five minutes away instead of twenty-five.

Ipoh Garden East and the old town win on variety. That's where the brunch cafes, the pizza places and the more elaborate western menus are, and if you want a long weekend brunch with good coffee and a photogenic room, go there — we're not going to pretend otherwise. What Menglembu does well is a proper plate of food, close to home, at a price that doesn't make a weeknight dinner a decision.

Practical tips

1. Check the closed day first. Monday and Tuesday closures are both common around here. We close Tuesdays.
2. Arrive before noon for lunch, before 6:30pm for dinner. That beats almost every queue in the area.
3. Watch for the afternoon break. A lot of Menglembu kitchens, ours included, shut between roughly 3:00 and 4:30pm on weekdays.
4. WhatsApp ahead for five or more. Most family restaurants here take bookings that way, and the table will be ready when you walk in.
5. Carry small notes for the market and kopitiam-style places.
6. Delivery works for several of these — foodpanda and Grab both cover Menglembu — but you'll pay more than eating in, and chops travel better than noodles.
